Holding Off For A Hero by Gail MacMillan - Super Book Blast!

Please help me welcome fellow Wild Rose Press author, Gail MacMillanon her Super Book Blast tour promoting her latest release, Holding off for a Hero!

It's a romance novel with not just two intriguing main characters, but also a four legged friend - the heroine in question has a pug! And she and her pug need rescuing. Sounds like my kind of read. After all, I've always wanted a pug...

Holding Off For a Hero

by Gail MacMillan

Beautiful, vivacious Emma Prescott has a love-'em-and-leave-'em reputation.  Fact is, Emma's holding off for a hero.  When she moves to a cabin at wilderness Loon Lake and meets her one neighbor biology professor Frasier MacKenzie, he's still just another guy, even with his killer blue eyes and body that just won't quit...until he rescues her and her Pug from one danger after another.  Then he definitely falls into hero territory.  But the professor has no intention of filling the role of white knight in Emma's life.  All he wants is to be rid of her and her annoying little dog so he can get on with his research. In fact, he's ordered to get rid of them whether he wants to or not.  Looks like Emma may have to go on holding off for a hero...

The unmistakable screech made his breath clog in his throat. His body froze in midstride. The Panther! Dear God! Emma! Pulling his gun, he plunged into the darkening bush.

“Emma!” he yelled.

Her cry sent him charging forward.  He rounded a small thicket to see her huddled
against the trunk of a pine, the Pug clutched in her  arms. Stalking toward her, bird-dog fashion, its belly dragging on the snow, was the Panther.

He raised the gun. His hand shuddered. No, please, God, not now! Taking aim, he fired.  The report rocked the silence of the forest. The big cat screamed as the bullet whizzed inches over   its head. Roaring, it whirled and vanished into the shadowy bush. The silence of the winter twilight returned. The hand holding the smoking gun dropped to his side, every ounce of strength drained.

“Thank God you missed.” Emma recovered her speech. “It would have been awful to have killed him.”

 “Damn it, Emma…!”

“Well, if he hadn’t run away from that warning shot, you would have got him with the next one,

“Right.” Her absolute confidence made him choke out the word.  Still clutching the Pug, she suddenly sank down on her haunches in the snow.

“Frasier, I was so scared,” she hiccupped.

But first of all, let me tell you about one of my favourite romance novels:

Through the Fire by the mega talented Beth Trissel!

Will love inflame these two natural born enemies in fiery destruction?
At the height of the French and Indian War, a young English widow ventures into the colonial frontier in search of a fresh start. She never expects to find it in the arms of the half-Shawnee, half-French warrior who makes her his prisoner in the raging battle to possess a continent--or to be aided by a mysterious white wolf and a holy man.

I loved the atmosphere the author creates in this novel. The mix of Frontier settlers and Natives always makes for an intriguing read, especially with a paranormal element added, and Beth Trissel knows how to create gripping, moving plots.

The beautiful description of the dramatic landscape makes you feel like you're there. You can sense the danger lurking. And the author's attention to historical detail is brilliant.

Shoka is the half-Shawnee warrior hero, and I was in love. A deep, fascinating man with an edge. Not surprising, really, that Rebecca fell for him - in the end. As dark forces gather around them, they have to face their challenges together. Will they find their happy end? Find out for yourself!

Right, so check out this fabulous read and let me know what you think! Don't forget...a PDF copy of Highland Arm is up for grabs for one lucky commenter here ;-)

Romance author Cait O'Sullivan reveals all!

I'm thrilled to welcome back romance author, Cait O'Sullivan

A wonderful friend and critique partner for many years, I've jumped at the chance to quiz her following the release of her first novel, Romancing the Seas, a brilliant, fast paced read full of tension. Of the romantic kind, of course... ;-)

So, here's the Q&A with the lovely Cait. Enjoy!

1. How did you become a writer?
Funnily enough, I think I always have been a writer but it's only as I've grown up that I realised it. you know the way when you're young you think that everyone is good at the things you're good at and that everybody relies on writing as a means of expression. It was only after I travelled the world that I found that not to be the case. So then  I decided when my youngest was born that now was the time to devote to following my dream to write.

2. Describe your perfect hero!
He'd be rugged, weather beaten, a man with a chiseled jaw who is happy to get lost with me in the mountains at the same time knowing he can find his way out anytime he chooses. Nice strong thighs and glorious shoulders making me feel all nice and feminine and whenever he puts his arms around me, I'm home.

3. Tell us what inspired Romancing the Seas.
My time in New Zealand. I just had to write about it as a way of remembering it. Also I love the whole embarking on a new life, leaving the old one behind -- heck knows I've done that often enough myself. Pippa is a head chef because I've worked in the H&C industry so I know a thing or two about it and wanted to write what I knew. As for Jonathon, I have no clue where he came from :)

4. What do you read at the moment?
Am currently reading The Kashmir Shawl by Rosie Thomas. The itchy travelling feet have started -- I'm so envying folk who are jetting off to unknown countries like oh I don't know, Bavaria :). So the next best thing to actually doing it myself is reading about new places and Rosie Thomas does it so very well. She depicts Srinagar so beautifully and I love her treks over the Himalayas from Ladekh, both in modern times and in the 1940's. I love mountains and travelling so this book is really doing it for me.
5. And finally, how does a romance author relax?
Dance! I love music and dancing and have found a fabulous dance class on every Saturday. Before this, I relied on going out and dancing but now I've found this, it keeps me going every day. Then when I go out to dance, it's so much easier to dance like no-one is watching. Which of course, is the key to dancing. If there's nothing in the diary, the girls and I just put music on and shimmy around the house. Although they like One Direction...! I know I know. I have years of it ahead of me.

Thanks for those revealing answers, Cait. Ahh, dancing. I tend to forget people are watching when I'm dancing. Not often enough these days, sadly.

Blurb for Romancing the Seas:
Sous-chef Pippa Renshaw thinks a change of scene will mend a bruised heart, so she swaps her job in a prestigious London restaurant to head-chef on a cruise ship sailing around New Zealand. A great plan until she meets her new CEO, the delectable Jonathon Eagleton, and discovers she has to share a suite with him.

Even though sparks fly whenever they are together, Jonathon steadfastly keeps her at arm’s length, which suits Pippa just fine because she’s still getting over the betrayal of the last time she had a relationship with the boss.

The situation is starting to feel like solitary confinement until a thunderstorm traps them in a tramper’s hut while hiking. Suddenly a different kind of storm unleashes inside the hut.

But will they be able to go back to their previous status now the line has been crossed?

For Love of Sarah - Hazel Statham

Today, I'm hosting regency romance author Hazel Statham on her successful blog tour promoting her latest release, For Love of Sarah.

Hazel has offered some fabulous prizes - including jewellery! Tempted? Read on!

But first of all, here's Hazel telling us who inspired her writing...

Inspiring Authors of Regency Romance
When I first started writing I was influenced by authors such as the Bronte sisters, Austen and Sabatini but when I read my first Regency Romance, Regency Buck by Georgette Heyer, I knew I had found my era.  Heyer has remained my main inspiration ever since and I am never more pleased than when my writing is likened to hers.  I love her wit and humour and the ability she has to bring the romance and elegance of the period alive to her readers.  However, Regency isn’t the only era she portrays and all her books are as historically correct as she can make them whether it be The Peninsular War or the Battle of Hastings, with only a few minor errors here and there.  If I had to choose my all-time favourite hero of hers it would, undoubtedly, be Justin, Duke of Avon from These Old Shades
Published in 1847, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte can’t be classed as Regency but, after Heyer, it has had the most influence on my work.  Edward Fairfax Rochester was the first hero I fell in love with between the pages of a novel and I think he has heavily influenced the heroes in my books ever since.    When Bronte created him more than 160 years ago, I wonder if she envisioned that he would still be as popular as he is today as he appeals to each new generation of readers.
Austen’s Fitzwilliam Darcy is another hero that ranks high on everyone’s list and I would have to include him as an integral part of my inspiration.  Of course, after reading literally hundreds of books over the years, many other authors inspire me to write without my being aware of their influence.  You don’t set out to knowingly emulate them, but their influence remains on a subliminal level.
No matter what the time period, as authors, we all have one aim in common, and that is to create characters our readers can relate to and care about.

For Love of Sarah
by Hazel Statham

How many times can a heart be broken?  How many times can love be denied?  Sarah and Alexander were destined for each other but after just four short weeks of marriage, their lives were torn asunder.
Alexander, Earl of Thorne thought he had found his ideal mate but, when Sarah absconded shortly after their marriage, his world came crashing down.  Now, five years later, he discovers her in a remote Yorkshire village.
Sarah had thought she was safe, but when, severely injured in a freak accident, her husband is thrust once more into her life, she fears her dark secrets and the fact she has a son, will become known.
Despite her own desperate longings, she continually repudiates Alexander’s efforts of reconciliation. However, fate conspires against her, and when her home is made uninhabitable by floods, she and her young son are forced to accept his aid and return to her former home.
Discovery threatens and, despite her breaking heart, she plans to leave Alexander’s life.  What is this secret that makes it so imperative that she should abscond from him yet again?  Can two broken hearts cleave and emerge victorious or will life's cruel forces tear them apart forever?

Yorkshire, June, 1815

Why now? Dear God, why now? After almost five years of schooling his body and mind from wanting her, the mere sight of her slight form across the crowded marketplace had brought back all the old emotions he’d worked so desperately to subdue, and he reeled with the impact.
He’d thought the stance of the young woman was familiar, as he had on numerous occasions, only to be disappointed, but when she moved into full view by the bakery stall, he immediately realized that it truly was his wife. Sarah, his senses cried, sweet, faithless Sarah. They had been wed but four weeks when she disappeared from his home and life. To find her now in a remote Yorkshire village defied all sense.
His impulse was to confront her immediately, but as he moved to tether his horse to the rail outside the smithy, the blacksmith came out to take the beast from him.
“Lost his shoe, has he, sir?” the man asked, casting an appreciative eye over the large chestnut. “Fine animal, if I might say so…”
Thrusting the reins into the smithy’s hands, Alexander Markham, Earl of Thorne, snapped, “Left side, fore,” effectively cutting short the blacksmith’s appraisal of his mount, and, turning on his heel, left the man to stare after him as he made his way into the throng of people in the marketplace.
Despite his advantage of height, he could see no sign of his wife. She had moved from the stall—but to where? Becoming frustrated with the press of people that milled around him, he strode toward the centre where the ground rose to provide a vantage point, but to no avail. Sarah was nowhere in view, and he began to doubt his own perception.

An affair and a shocking secret threaten to tear apart a rich and powerful family.

Claudia Samson, housekeeper to the privileged Callahan family, finds herself alone and pregnant after a brief fling with Gavin, the youngest Callahan son. When she informed him of the pregnancy he accused her of running a scam and made it clear that she was on her own.

Brody Callahan, Gavin's older half-brother, has devoted his entire life to running the family business. He doesn't realize what he's been missing by throwing himself into his work until he finds Claudia asleep in the family guest bedroom. He has discovered his very own Sleeping Beauty. Intrigued by the young woman, he vows to get to know her better.

Although Claudia is instantly attracted to the charismatic businessman, she knows her secret will destroy any chance they have for a future together, but Brody's awfully hard to resist.

Meanwhile, as Gavin watches Brody and Claudia's relationship develop, he begins to devise a plan to use the secret to his advantage. He wants full partnership in the business—something he was denied by both his brother and their deceased father—and maybe now he can finally obtain it.

Can Brody and Claudia survive the storm, or will the secrets and blackmail destroy both them and their love?

Content Warning: graphic sex and some explicit language!

When Claudia made her way outside, the limo was there, but the driver wasn't. She looked around, but didn't see him. She decided to get in and wait for him. He'd have to come back for the car sooner or later.

She opened the door and slipped inside, placing her bag on the floor. She was grateful the air conditioning was on in the car, another perk the bus didn't have.

"Hello, sweetheart."

"Brody?" She looked up and saw him sitting next to her. "What are you doing here?"

"I wanted to see you." He moved his arm around her waist and pulled her close to him. "I missed you." He freed her hair from her ponytail and shook it out with his fingers so that it fell down her back and over her shoulders. "Much better, princess."

She laughed because she had just thought of him as The Prince. If he only knew.

"What is it?"

"I'm happy to see you." She giggled. "You make things much better."

"Hard day?"

She leaned closer to him, took his face between her hands, and kissed him. At first, she moved slowly, but the way he looked at her with those smoldering eyes told her everything she needed to know. He was just as excited to see her as she was to see him.

She ran her tongue along his lips, begging for entrance. He eagerly accepted as he parted them and slipped his tongue inside her mouth. His breath was hot and his lips were hungry as he kissed her with more force than she expected. She moved her hands up and twisted her fingers in his hair, moving him closer to her.

He pulled her onto his lap, pushed her hair to the side, and kissed her neck. She could feel his excitement pressing against her hip. His erection was trapped between his stomach and her side. He shifted his hips and rubbed himself into her. She sighed against his mouth, but then he pulled away.

"Claudia." The sound of his voice was both desperate and breathless. "I could take you right here, but that’s not what I want."

"It isn't?" She didn't mean to sound disappointed.

"Let me rephrase that." He moved her to sit beside him. "I would want nothing more than to have my way with you right here, but I don't think either of us intended it to be that way between us the first time."

"You think about our first time?"

"Every second of the day." He shrugged. "I'm a guy."

She laughed, but realized he was right. She'd gotten carried away. It was the way he looked at her, the scent of his body wash, all spice and cinnamon, that drove her crazy.

"It's your fault," she said. "You're irresistible."

"I was thinking the same thing about you."

She shook her head and looked down. She felt his fingers on her chin in an instant, and then she was gazing into his eyes. She loved those blue depths. They were soothing and made her forget everything she had on her mind.

"You really need to take my compliments better. I speak the truth." He kissed her. "I'll keep telling you how perfect you are and eventually you'll believe it."

She would never believe it. A perfect woman wouldn't lead a man like Brody on. A perfect woman would tell him the truth. She was far from perfect.

Gambling on a Secret with Sara Walter Ellwood

I'm delighted to welcome romantic suspense author Sara Walter Ellwood to My Place. She chats about an old Western town, Colton in Texas. Fascinating!

Sara is also doing a giveaway on her blog tour so read on for your chance to win!

So, without further ado, we delve into the wild west...

Welcome to Colton, Texas!

When you crack open the cover of Gambling On A Secret, you are also opening the door to the little town of Colton in Forest County, Texas. A place seeped in history and Texas pride. So, in good Southern hospitality, c’mon in, hang your hat, and grab a glass of sweet tea—or a long neck bottle of brew or even a shot glass Jack. I’ll show you around.

Forest County gets its name from the oak forests that covered the land along the creeks running through it, but the majority of the land is grassland. Colton comes from the shortening of the original name for the cattle town Cole’s Town. The frontier town was nothing more than a Southern Baptist Church, a general store, a one room school, and the all important saloon. The large oak tree in the center of the town eventually became the spot for the courthouse. Fitting, considering it was from the massive branches the town’s founders hung anyone who questioned their law.

Today, the saloon is still standing and is still an important outlet after a long day to catch a beer and to listen to the local band. Several other churches joined the Baptists, and the educational system includes the small university, Colton College. And the old oak tree still stands before the courthouse as a reminder of Wild West justice.

The people of Colton have a sense of community and look out for each other. They are patriotic to a fault, but proud of their Southern heritage. They love football, rodeo and good gossip. But don’t let the idyllic quaintness fool you as the members of the founding families are about to find out.

Murder, theft, deceit, fraud and secrets are about to shake this little town to its very foundations.

And the only way to survive is to rediscover the only thing that matters….

When Charli bets everything on a secret, will she find the deck stacked against her?

Former runaway-turned heiress Charli Monroe is hiding her sordid past and planning a future in Colton, Texas. Attending the local college for a degree in social work, she intends to raise cattle on her newly purchased ranch, which she plans to open as a home for troubled teens. Only a few glitches—the Victorian mansion is crumbling, the barn needs a roof, and her oilman neighbor wants more than friendship. When she meets Dylan Quinn, Charli is willing to take a chance on the town drunk to help her rebuild the rundown ranch.

Dylan has his demons, too. The former Special Forces commander can’t get past his ex-wife’s betrayal and the botched mission that left him with much more than a bad limp. Certain the greedy oilman next door to Charli wants much more than just her heart, Dylan’s even willing to stop drinking in order to protect her.

When things get dangerous and secrets of the past are revealed, is he only looking out for his new employer, or is she the new start he so desperately needs?

COVER QUOTE: “Full of intrigue, tangled pasts, and raw emotions, this one is guaranteed to keep you turning pages from start to finish and then wishing for one more chapter!”
Carolyn Brown, New York Times bestselling author of Just a Cowboy and His Baby.

“Ferguson, what are you doing here?” Dylan barked.

Leon ambled toward them on the stone path. “I’m saving a young maiden from torment. What are you doing here, playing the part of the devil?”

“I’m Miss Monroe’s new manager.” The deadly edge of his voice matched the flintiness of his eyes. “If there’s anyone to save the young maiden from, it’s you.”

“Mr. Quinn, please.” She turned to Leon. “Leon, is there something I can do for you?”

He smiled, showing off perfect white teeth in a face handsome enough to belong to an actor. “I was just passing by on my way home and decided to stop. How are the boys working out?”

Dylan’s stance widened and his hands flexed at his slides. “What boys?”

“Charli and I have entered into a business arrangement.”

She lost the battle with the urge to wrap her arms around herself. As much as she appreciated Leon’s kindness, respected him, and was even a little attracted to him, something about him didn’t sit right with her. He represented her peers in the community. According to Mrs. Pratt, besides the Cartwrights, she and Leon were undoubtedly the wealthiest residents in the county. No one in Colton could learn about her past. It would ruin her, and Leon, no doubt, had the means to dig up the dirt.

“Really?” Dylan stepped closer to her in a protective manner. Whiskey tainted his breath as the warmth of the exhalations tickled her cheek. “What kind of business arrangement?”

She could protect herself. Dylan Quinn wasn’t any safer than Leon Ferguson. Stepping away from him, she forced her arms to her sides. “Mr. Quinn, I can handle this.”

She faced Leon. “I’m amazed by how much the men got done since starting on Monday. The foreman told me last evening they’d be reseeding another fifty acres for hay this morning. And they have the corrals fixed and started on the fencing in the north pasture.”

“Good, good.” He glanced at Dylan. “I’ll be going, unless you need a more reliable exterminator. I couldn’t help but overhear about your snake infestation. I can give you the name of the company that has gotten rid of the snakes in our lakes over on Oak Springs for years.”

Although he presented the perfect solution, she didn’t the like way Leon had looked at Dylan as he said the word exterminator. “No, Mr. Quinn is quite capable of getting rid of the snake.”

“Oh, I’m sure he is.” Leon tipped his hat. “Let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you, Charli.” Dylan’s jaw tightened as his uncle glanced at him. “It’s good to see you up among the living again.”

Leon headed back to his Porsche. With no pretense of lowering his voice, Dylan said, “Now, there’s a snake no one wants in their garden.”

Upon hearing the jibe, Leon’s shoulders jerked in mid-stride.

Rattled by Leon’s attention and the snake fiasco, she turned on Dylan. “You aren’t off the hook. I want those snakes gone.”

“We’ll see.”

“I hate snakes.” She shuddered and put her hands on her hips. “Maybe I should have asked him who the exterminator is.”
